How ClearWeave Careers connects neurodivergent talent to the workforce

Finding the right employee often starts long before a resume reaches a hiring manager's desk. Across the country, community-based organizations help individuals build workplace skills, gain confidence, and prepare for employment before they ever submit an application.

A mission centered on opportunity

Based in Bristol, CT with services extending throughout the Southern California and the New York metropolitan regions, ClearWeave Careers supports job seekers across the United States and Canada.

The organization primarily serves adults on the autism spectrum while also supporting individuals with ADHD, anxiety, depression, and others facing challenges returning to the workforce. Rather than waiting for opportunities to appear, the team actively develops relationships with employers, recognizing that successful employment begins with preparation, partnership, and a willingness to look beyond traditional hiring pathways.

In your own words, how would you describe ClearWeave's mission, and what inspired you to start this work?

Our mission is to help people find meaning and purpose through employment and a steady paycheck.

When I (Ryan Casey, founder of ClearWeave Careers) first entered the Autism support field, I saw that many individuals were being shut out by society. I couldn't tolerate that, so I started helping Neurodivergent individuals apply to local businesses. Then I would keep following up with the businesses until someone gave them a chance. We found many "allies," but there’s still a lot of work to do. The ironic thing: these individuals benefit businesses. They are loyal, smart, and care about their job. You're helping both yourself and the Neurodivergent individual when you hire from this underemployed and underappreciated talent pool.

Preparing individuals for employment

No two participants begin from the same place, so ClearWeave tailors its approach to each individual's goals, experience, and interests.

Career preparation extends well beyond resume writing and job searching. Participants receive guidance in interviewing, workplace communication, executive functioning, portfolio development, career planning, online research, and community networking.

When someone is ready to begin a job search, support doesn't stop with a list of openings. The organization researches local employers, reaches out to businesses on a participant's behalf, and develops employment opportunities that align with the individual's interests and career goals. Maintaining a proactive approach allows ClearWeave to support job seekers wherever they live throughout the United States and Canada. Job coaching continues even after employment begins, helping participants successfully transition into the workplace.

Walk us through a typical participant's journey, from the first conversation through starting a new job. What does that experience look like?

Our clients begin their journey at ClearWeave with a free consultation with our Executive Director, Ryan Casey. This first conversation gives families and clients an opportunity to share their goals, interests, and hopes for the future, while also learning more about the support we provide. From there, we thoughtfully match each person with a mentor who aligns with their personality, strengths, and career aspirations.

The mentor and client work closely together to build the foundation for a successful job search. That includes creating resumes, LinkedIn profiles, portfolios, and cover letters, while also developing interview skills through coaching and mock interviews in a supportive, low-pressure environment. The relationship between mentor and client is incredibly important to us, and we strive to make the process collaborative, encouraging, and tailored to each individual's unique path.

Our mentors spend a significant amount of time, both during and outside of sessions, researching industries that align with each client's interests and reaching out to potential employers and community connections. One aspect of our program that we especially value is facilitating industry mentor meetings, where clients can connect with professionals working in their desired fields. These conversations give clients a clearer picture of what a day in that career looks like and provide an opportunity to ask meaningful questions about their future goals.

Recognizing strengths and potential

A number of neurodivergent individuals possess valuable skills but continue to encounter barriers during the hiring process. ClearWeave takes a strengths-based approach, helping participants build careers that reflect their abilities, interests, and long-term goals while encouraging employers to recognize talent that might otherwise be overlooked.

For employers, that means meeting candidates whose goals, skills, and readiness have already been thoughtfully considered. By focusing on fit rather than assumptions, the organization helps businesses broaden where they look for qualified talent while creating opportunities for individuals to demonstrate what they can contribute.

Neurodiversity by the numbers

The unemployment rate for neurodivergent individuals is estimated between 30%–40%.[1]

37% of employed neurodivergent individuals choose not to disclose their condition due to fears of stigma, and 46% do not ask for accommodations during the hiring process.[2]

Progress is slowly being made. In the US, the employment rate for workers with cognitive disabilities climbed from 23% in 2010 to 41% in 2023.[3]

What do employers often misunderstand about neurodivergent job seekers, and what tends to change once they've hired someone through ClearWeave?

Many employers initially have questions or uncertainty about what it means to hire a neurodivergent employee. We often hear concerns about whether someone will be comfortable in a fast-paced environment, manage busy workplaces, or adapt to roles that require strong attention to detail.

What has been so encouraging is how quickly those concerns disappear once employers get to know our clients. Time and time again, they discover individuals who are thoughtful, dependable, creative, and deeply committed to doing meaningful work. Many of our clients bring unique perspectives, strong problem-solving skills, and a genuine dedication to their teams.

At ClearWeave, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to have their strengths recognized. When employers are willing to take that first step, they often realize that neurodivergent employees are not only capable—they become valued, trusted members of the workplace. Watching those relationships grow and seeing employers become advocates for inclusive hiring is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.

Stories of opportunity

Behind every resume is a person working toward a meaningful career.

The impact of ClearWeave's work is best understood through the people it serves. While every journey is unique, the stories below illustrate how individualized support, practical experience, and employer partnerships have helped individuals build skills, overcome barriers, and pursue meaningful careers.

Could you share success stories that illustrate the kinds of careers your clients have pursued?

Individuals come to ClearWeave from many different backgrounds and stages of life. Some are entering the workforce for the first time, while others are rebuilding their careers after struggling to find the right fit.

One young adult on the autism spectrum developed interviewing skills, gained experience through volunteer opportunities, and ultimately secured competitive employment. Today, they live independently, maintain steady employment, and continue building on that success.

Another individual had withdrawn from college and was experiencing significant anxiety that made it difficult to pursue work or social connections. Through individualized coaching, internships, and gradual exposure to new opportunities, they developed professional skills, secured employment in a field they enjoy, and built lasting friendships through their workplace community.

We also support individuals pursuing creative and technical careers. One individual with a passion for digital art and video editing received support building a portfolio, strengthening professional skills, and identifying opportunities aligned with their interests, helping them become more competitive in the job market.

Although every journey is different, these stories reflect a common theme: personalized support, practical experience, and encouragement can help people discover careers that align with their strengths and goals.

Supporting employers beyond the hire

Hiring support continues well after an offer is accepted.

ClearWeave works alongside employers throughout recruiting, interviewing, onboarding, and long-term retention. The organization also helps businesses strengthen their neurodiversity hiring initiatives, providing guidance that supports both the employer and the employee after placement.

For employers, this approach reduces uncertainty when expanding recruitment efforts. Instead of beginning with a stack of applications, organizations gain access to candidates who have received individualized preparation and ongoing support, along with a trusted partner that remains engaged throughout the employment journey.

How does ClearWeave continue supporting both employers and participants after a hire is made? What feedback do you hear most often from the employers you work with?

When a client secures employment, our support continues. We stay connected with both the client and their employer to celebrate successes, work through any challenges, and ensure the individual has the tools and encouragement needed to thrive in their new role. We believe that meaningful employment is not just about getting a job—it's about building long-term confidence, growth, and stability.

The feedback we hear most often from employers is that our clients exceed expectations. They frequently share how impressed they are by their dedication, strong work ethic, attention to detail, and genuine commitment to their responsibilities. Many employers also appreciate the ongoing support we provide and often tell us that our clients have been a positive addition to their team.

What employers can gain from community partnerships

Community-based organizations help employers connect with talented individuals who may not be reached through traditional recruiting methods. By preparing candidates for employment, understanding the populations they serve, and providing ongoing support throughout the hiring process, organizations like ClearWeave help create stronger matches between employers and job seekers.

Working with community-based organizations can also help employers broaden their talent pipelines while gaining a trusted partner that understands both workforce development and long-term retention. Depending on an individual's eligibility, hiring through organizations that serve targeted populations may also create opportunities to qualify for workforce incentives such as the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC). While those incentives can provide additional value, the lasting benefit comes from discovering qualified talent, expanding access to opportunity, and building stronger workforces.

If you could share one message with employers who have never considered partnering with a community-based organization, what would it be?

If we could share one message with employers who haven't yet partnered with a community-based organization, it would be to consider the potential they might be overlooking.

Working with a partner like ClearWeave Careers is ultimately about expanding access—creating real opportunities for neurodivergent individuals to bring their strengths into the workplace in roles where they can genuinely thrive. When employers are open to that partnership, they’re not just filling positions; they’re helping build pathways to employment that are more thoughtful, supported, and successful for everyone involved.
